The story
Bomkai originated around the village of Bomkai in Ganjam district and later found a major weaving base in Subarnapur. Its design language combines tribal geometry, nature and ceremonial symbolism.
How it is made
The ground cloth is woven first while supplementary weft threads are inserted to form motifs, especially in the border and pallu. Some contemporary versions combine Bomkai ornament with bandha ikat bodies.
Materials and character
Cotton and silk versions are common, with contrasting yarn and occasional zari used to articulate the dense pallu.
Why it matters
Bomkai preserves a distinctive dialogue between Odisha's tribal visual culture and sophisticated handloom technique.
